Melissa B. Brisman, founder of Reproductive Possibilities and New Jersey-based reproductive lawyer, was recently quoted in a USA TODAY article about the future of IVF — the process by which eggs are retrieved and fertilized in a lab to make an embryo that’s transferred to the uterus to create a pregnancy — in light of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, which ended the national right to abortion. The ruling has raised concerns about the fate of embryos in more conservative states, where personhood laws, which give legal rights to embryos and fetuses, could create complications for individuals and couples pursuing treatment.  

In the article, Brisman shares her concerns on personhood laws and the need for IVF exemptions: “Whatever you think about abortion, we want to make sure that we preserve fertility treatment for people, for women, for men who need it.”
